Testosterone for Women

Testosterone Is Not Just a Men’s Hormone

If you are a woman, there is a good chance you have never given testosterone a second thought. Estrogen gets all the attention, so that is where the conversation starts and usually where it ends. But women produce testosterone too, and it does far more than most people assume.

Levels typically begin declining in the late thirties and early forties. And when they do, the effects reach well past the one thing testosterone is known for.

What It Actually Feels Like

The conversation almost always starts with sex drive. It never stays there. Within a few minutes it becomes something broader: loss of energy, brain fog, no motivation, walking into a room and forgetting why. Sleep that does not feel like sleep. The weights at the gym feeling heavier than they did last year. Difficulty holding onto muscle, and a body composition that shifts even though nothing about your routine changed.

Most women describe it the same way — like not feeling like themselves anymore. It is not depression. It is closer to someone turning the volume down on your personality and losing the remote.

The Lab Range Problem

Standard laboratory reference ranges for total testosterone in women are wide. A result near the bottom of that range still prints as “normal,” which means you can feel exhausted, foggy, and unmotivated and be told your labs look fine.

Normal and optimal are not the same thing. A reference range describes a population. It does not describe how you function, and it was never designed to.

What Testosterone Does for Women

It is not a single-purpose hormone. In women it contributes to brain function and mental clarity, nervous system regulation, muscle preservation, bone density, energy production, and mood stability. That is why a decline shows up as a cluster of seemingly unrelated symptoms rather than one obvious problem — and why those symptoms are so often attributed to stress, aging, or something psychological.

No, You Will Not Grow a Beard

This is the fear that stops most women from asking about it. Properly managed testosterone therapy for women does not cause masculinization. Dosing for women is a fraction of what men receive, and the goal is restoring levels to a healthy female range — not exceeding it. That requires medical oversight and follow-up labs, which is exactly why this is not something to source outside a clinical setting.

What You Should Not Accept

A pat on the head and a prescription for an antidepressant, when the underlying issue is hormonal. The number of women handed that answer is staggering. If your symptoms started when your hormones shifted, that is worth investigating before anything else.

How We Approach It

It starts with labs — a full panel, not a single number. We review your blood work, identify actual deficiencies, and build a protocol around how you feel, not just where you land on a reference chart. Follow-up labs confirm the protocol is doing what it should.

Testosterone for Women Online, in 47 States

All of that happens by telehealth. Viking Alternative Medicine is a national telehealth hormone clinic, so you do not need to live near a clinic to be treated.

How Telehealth Care Works

  1. Intake. You tell us your history, your symptoms and what you want to change.
  2. Lab work. Your provider orders a full panel, drawn at a lab near you.
  3. Provider visit. You go through the results with a licensed provider by phone or video.
  4. Follow-up labs. If you start treatment, repeat labs confirm where your levels actually land, and your provider adjusts from there.

Where We Treat: 47 States

Viking treats patients by telemedicine in 47 states — every state except Alabama, Mississippi and Hawaii. Consultations happen by phone or video, lab work is done at a lab near you, and medications ship to your door. The current list is on States We Serve.

What the Research Supports

The 2019 Global Consensus Position Statement on the Use of Testosterone Therapy for Women — endorsed by The Endocrine Society, The North American Menopause Society, the International Menopause Society and others — is the reference point most clinicians work from. Two points in it are worth knowing before you start:

  • On indications, it states that “[t]he only evidence-based indication for testosterone for women is for HSDD [hypoactive sexual desire disorder/dysfunction],” and that “[t]here are insufficient data for using testosterone for any other symptom/condition or for disease prevention.”¹
  • On dosing, it states that “[t]reatment should only be with formulations that achieve blood concentrations of testosterone that approximate premenopausal physiological concentrations”¹ — the healthy female range described above, not male-range dosing.

That is a statement about what the published evidence currently establishes, not a prediction about you. Your provider individualizes care from your labs, your history and your goals, and decides with you whether testosterone belongs in your protocol at all.
