Diet: What to Eat for Higher Testosterone

Eat Enough Calories

Chronic caloric deficit is one of the fastest ways to crash your testosterone. Your body prioritizes survival over reproduction — and when it senses food scarcity, it shuts down hormone production. If you’re cutting for fat loss, do it in phases, not indefinitely.

Prioritize Healthy Fats

Testosterone is synthesized from cholesterol. Dietary fat is essential raw material. The research consistently shows that low-fat diets reduce testosterone levels. Focus on:

  • Eggs (whole — yolks contain the cholesterol needed for hormone production)
  • Avocados
  • Olive oil (extra virgin)

Screen for Sleep Apnea

If you snore heavily, wake up gasping, have morning headaches, or remain fatigued despite adequate hours in bed — get tested. Sleep apnea is a common, underdiagnosed cause of low testosterone. Treating sleep apnea can significantly improve T levels without medication.

Stress Management

Cortisol and testosterone are inversely related. Chronic stress, overtraining, poor sleep, and emotional strain all elevate cortisol — and elevated cortisol suppresses testosterone at multiple points in the production chain.

Practical Strategies

  • Adequate recovery between workouts: Don’t train hard 7 days a week.
  • Walk daily: Lowers cortisol without being stressful exercise.
  • Meditation or breathwork: 10 minutes daily can measurably reduce cortisol.
  • Social connection: Isolation and loneliness are chronic stressors. Prioritize meaningful relationships.
  • Address the source: If your job, relationship, or financial situation is chronically stressful, no amount of supplements will compensate.

When Natural Optimization Isn’t Enough

For some men, lifestyle changes bring testosterone from borderline low to healthy. For others — particularly men with primary hypogonadism, testicular injury, or significant age-related decline — no amount of lifestyle optimization will produce normal levels.

The key distinction: optimize your lifestyle first. Get labs after 3-6 months of consistent diet, exercise, and sleep improvements. If your testosterone is still clinically low with symptoms — TRT is the appropriate next step.
